She-Ra by MattiasFahlberg She-Ra by MattiasFahlberg
!! FULL VIEW !!

So I made this piece for [link] s re-design challenge at He-man.org. The theme was of course She-Ra as you might see. :P If you however don't know who she is you can click this link ->[link]

She-Ra is not one of my favorite characters from the He-man universe BUT the thing i do love is a challenge. So I decided to participate. My goal was to re-create her image rather than just her gear. I wanted to take all those cute and cuddly things that made She-Ra and mix it up with my own take to it. So my She-Ra is a warrior queen who kicks ass and sometimes slashes the heads of her foes.

I had a blast painting this, all the creepy craziness was awesome to paint. I hope you guys dig it as much as I loved painting it. ENJOY!

FOR AN ALT. VERSION WITH EVEN MORE GIRL POWER

I like She-Ra herself, but I admit her biggest flaw was all the annoyingly cute and cuddly crap that pervaded her series. She-Ra was meant to be He-Man for girls obviously, but it didn't need to be flooded with stuff better suited to My Little Pony or something (the old toy commercials for her on youtube definitely do not focus on her Wonder Woman like strength or war against the forces of evil). She herself was as badass as He-Man, but the majority of her allies were characters like Perfuma & Peekablue and annoying stuff like that. He-Man got badass allies like Man-At-Arms, Teela, Roboto, Zodak, Ram Man, the Sorceress, etc, while She-Ra had backup from glorified barbie dolls (designed to look pretty but did not give off the vibe of heroes fighting a war to reclaim their planet lol)...She had a handful of good allies, or good concepts for them at least, but the rest were not on par with the Masters of the Universe heroes. Then ya had the sidekicks like Madame Razz, Cowl (a flying Furbie lol), a Talking Broom...The list goes on XD

I'd like to see a modern take on She-Ra with better backup for her, I think it could be pulled off well nowadays. However, to be fair, She-Ra's villains were AWESOME (Hordak, Shadow Weaver, Catra, Leech, the list goes on...Kinda wish Skeletor would poach some of them for his crew lol), as was the concept of a hero fighting an uphill battle against an evil army that had already conquered the planet she was protecting. She-Ra's struggle against the Horde could be delightfully dark and intense, more so than it was allowed to be in the 80s.

P.S. nice touch with Grizzlor's head there, that's what he gets for being a Beastman knockoff with no special powers XD

Great work! She does have a little Uma Thurman in her face and the stance is very Kill Bill which is just perfect for her.

Thanks! It's creepy when you mentioned it because she was never on my mind painting this. When I read your comment I had to take a look her up in Kill Bill and your right about the likeness.

How curious! You have made She-Ra look amazing! Like you said, get rid of the cutesiness and stupidity and she has transformed into a Boris Vajellio maiden!!

Excellent work!!

Its amazing that when one tweaks all the things wrong, shape it honestly, and make it feesable, the net result is something brilliant.

Making She-Ra more badass? I'm all for it!

I've loved She-Ra and He-Man, had enjoyed both shows and the toys. I love the direction you're going with them in your paintings.

Happy you dig it! It's always a risk trying to change things up with old classic characters that people love but I can't help myself from doing it. So it's nice to get feedback that you did good! ;) Thanks again.

You're welcome.

I agree. I love seeing different interpretations of classic characters and can understand why some people wouldn't like revamps. The romantic interpretations of the Phantom isn't to my liking; I prefer the original Erik. I like Heath Ledger's Joker, others don't.

Do you think you keep doing it because of the risk, or is it because it challenges you? Maybe a little of both? It's obvious you're having a lot of fun! :D

Good question! I belive it's a mix of both the challenges and the risk. The challenge is to take something that other artists have painted and making it my own. For every fan art piece I make I always ask myself "What can I add to the characters? How can I make it come alive?" It's a fine balance between me staying true to the original while adding new elements to the character. Sometimes I crash and burn while other times I nail it. Regardless of the outcome I learn from the feedback. So there is the risk factor.

In my opinion it's always a big risk trying to re-create characters that people love and since I want to do it in my own "style" and not stick to the original style I make it even more risky. But I must admit that I enjoy it because without risk comes no reward. If I want to get better as an artist I need both risk and challenge to get better.

I hope you understood all that rambling.

My sister can relate; she's been drawing fan art of her favorite characters for a long time. She has the same desire to stand out, to add to the characters, to keep herself challenged. She's expressed many times her worries about taking such risks.

The points you've made can also apply to original works. The challenge here is not to do something that has been done to death, to try to add something fresh to the genre, to be willing to break the rules and step outside the comfort zone.

For both, doing a variation on a theme is hard, but worth it when successful.
I wish some beginners would understand how important risk and challenge is to artistic growth. They play it too safe.

I agree with you. With risk you can crash and burn but as I stated you can't stay in your "safe zone" and expect to move forward. Do your sis have a DA gallery?
